Privacy Policy

Overview

Now Playing Notify ("the App") is a macOS menu bar application developed by Tom McFarlin ("we," "us," or "our"). This privacy policy explains how the App handles your information.

The short version: We don't collect any data. Period.

Information We Collect

None. The App does not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal information or usage data.

How the App Works

The App operates entirely on your device and performs the following functions:

• Reads current track information from Spotify — The App uses AppleScript to communicate with the Spotify desktop application on your Mac to retrieve the currently playing track name, artist, and album artwork URL.
• Displays native macOS notifications — When a track changes, the App shows a notification using Apple's built-in notification system.
• Downloads album artwork — The App downloads album artwork from Spotify's public CDN servers to display in notifications. These requests are made directly to Spotify's servers and do not pass through any servers we operate.
• Stores your notification preference — The App saves your preference for whether notifications are enabled or disabled. This preference is stored locally on your device using macOS's standard UserDefaults system and is never transmitted anywhere.

Data Storage

The only data stored by the App is:

• Notification preference — A simple on/off setting stored locally on your device
• Temporary artwork files — Album artwork images are temporarily cached in your system's temporary directory for notification display and are automatically cleaned up by macOS

No data is stored on external servers. No accounts are created. No analytics are collected.

Third-Party Services

The App does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

The App communicates only with:

1. The Spotify desktop application — Locally on your Mac, to read track information
2. Spotify's CDN servers — To download album artwork images for notifications

We have no access to these communications and do not operate any servers that process your data.

Network Usage

The App requires network access solely to download album artwork from Spotify's servers. No other network requests are made. The App does not:

• Send any data to our servers (we don't operate any)
• Track your listening history
• Record which songs you play
• Share any information with third parties

Children's Privacy

The App does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13 years of age.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Since we don't collect any data, changes would likely only clarify our practices or reflect changes in legal requirements.

Your Rights

Since we don't collect any personal data, there is no personal data to access, correct, or delete. Your notification preference is stored only on your device and can be changed at any time within the App.
