Overview
Drawer (“the App”) is a macOS menu bar app developed by Tom McFarlin (“we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy explains how the App handles your information.
Information we collect
None. The App does not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal information or usage data.
How the App works
Everything the App does happens on your Mac:
- Hides and shows menu bar icons. On macOS 26, the App changes the size of its own menu bar items to move the icons in the drawer out of view. On macOS 27, it asks macOS not to draw the icons of the apps in the drawer while it’s closed.
- Sees what’s in the drawer (macOS 27). With your permission, the App uses Accessibility to read the layout of the menu bar: where each icon sits and which app it belongs to. It uses this only to find the apps between its brackets. It does not read the contents of other apps’ windows or menus, and it does not control other apps.
- Lets new apps show their icons (macOS 27). While the drawer is closed, the App checks which apps are running so their icons keep showing. This list stays in memory and is never saved.
- Checks the notch (macOS 26). On a Mac with a notched display, the App reads the positions of menu bar items from the system window list to tell you how many icons fit beside the notch. It does not capture your screen.
Data stored on your Mac
The only data the App stores is:
- Drawer state: whether the drawer was last open or closed.
- Menu bar positions: where you dragged Drawer’s brackets, stored by macOS.
Both are kept with macOS’s standard preferences on your Mac. Nothing is stored on servers, no accounts are created, and no analytics are collected.
Permissions
- macOS 26 Tahoe: none.
- macOS 27: Accessibility, requested the first time you close the drawer. You can turn it off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility; the drawer then stays open.
The App never asks for Screen Recording, your files, your contacts, your location, or any other data. Accessibility requires the App to run outside Apple’s App Sandbox, so from version 0.3.0 it is no longer sandboxed.
Network usage
The App makes no network requests and works without an internet connection. It does not:
- Send any data to our servers (we don’t operate any)
- Track which apps or menu bar icons you use
- Check for updates in the background
- Share any information with third parties
The App is downloaded from GitHub. GitHub’s own privacy policy applies to that download, and we do not receive any information about who downloads the App.
Third-party services
The App does not include any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
Children’s privacy
The App does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Your rights
Because we don’t collect personal data, there is nothing to access, correct, or delete. The App’s settings stay on your Mac and are removed when you delete the App’s preferences.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new date. Since we don’t collect any data, changes will most likely clarify our practices or reflect new legal requirements.
